How to Remain Professional in the Face of Adversity: Professionalism and Adversity

How do you respond in the face of adversity? In other words, what happens to your level of professionalism?

How to remain professional in the face of adversity is problematic, particularly for those who have not experienced the kinds of training that many academic professionals have had.

Professionalism is a standard that people strive to attain, particularly when it comes to their occupations.

Being a professional person, as well as building and maintaining professional relationships, places them in good standing because they gain respect from others. Many people value professionalism as a personal expression of their character and strive to maintain a professional appearance, use professional speech, as well as demonstrate a spirit of professionalism in their mode of operation.

Non-professionalism often surfaces during times of adversity in relation to unforeseen circumstances like disasters, personal misfortunes, or calamities of various kinds. Circumstances in life can change drastically when there is adversity and no one is exempt from experiencing conflict or distress.

Adversity leads to fear which triggers panic, even in those who have a professional mind set. Fear brings about a sudden release of adrenal leading to a typical fight, flight or paralysis response. Be aware that you may experience this kind of a reaction. Remember that the adversity you experience from day to day, may prove instrumental in reinforcing your professionalism, regardless of what your circumstances are at any moment in time.

Stay calm and do not panic in the face of adversity!

Recognize the reality that everyone will respond in some way, either positive or negative. Assume a professional leadership role and help others to remain as professional as possible in attitude, word, action and deed. Your degree of professionalism will reflect your leadership ability.

At the same time, you may be shaking in your boots, or feel heart sick because of a calamity or disaster, but rather than focus on your personal thoughts and feelings, reach out to others. You may feel completely alone, but if you stand together and encourage others to do the same, the unity you experience will reinforce your professionalism. Encourage everyone to show concern, care and compassion for others.

Address the major issues in an appropriate manner, particularly those that may be life threatening. Do not focus on minor issues associated with adversity.

You may be able to designate, delegate or assign assistant-professionals to assist with essential tasks. Assign non-professionals to an appropriate assistant leader.

Notify appropriate authorities with respect to the circumstances as soon as possible, depending upon the type of adversity or the scale thereof. They may be able to offer advice or assistance that will help to resolve or rectify issues of concern.

Remember that no one is exempt from adversity in life on a personal level or otherwise, and being prepared for it can be important. Adversity is part of the unexpected challenges that everyone has to face, at one time or another. Stay motivated, positive and constructive in the face of adversity.

Welcome the challenges and transitions inevitably associated with adversity, as they may prove instrumental in bringing about positive changes in your life, as well as in the lives of others.
